Sea Buckthorn and etc

I took the week off of face stuff last week, and gave my skin a rest. Also, I was tired of poking my eyes so frequently (and I was hoping for the acne to quell). A friend of mine recommended some Sea Buckthorn oil, and while I was at whole foods over the weekend (to find ingredients for epic pork wellington)I thought I’d look in their oils/skin care/body section for Sea Buckthorn.
I tested the oil sample, and upon arriving home found that it did actually seem to help my skin – this awful cat scratch finally started healing and my breakout started to diminish. I ended up buying Sea Buckthorn Cream Body Wash – and used that on my face and skin today, and it was wonderful!

I love having a natural go-to for skin care, and I found one that really seems to work – especially for acne prone oily faces like mine. Almost like the lemon-honey toning mixture I made, and they work in tandem well. I’m hoping that I’m not just like super excited, but my face does seem clearer and more even. Also, it comes from citrus, which is great and reminds me a little bit of Florida, where I grew up and makes me happy. Tropical fruits ftw!
For the next 4 weeks I’ll be doing a tone up with another friend of mine and you can follow along by watching her blog or my tumblr. MWF are my Sculpting days, and TTS are my Cardio with a rest or whatever-i-wanna-do on a Sunday, which most likely still involves lots of walking. I’m using Fitocracy to carry my workout details, and my fitblr for steps/cardio/cals etc. I’m doing my days opposite Kahleesi for funs.
I might do more than one outfit post this week, depending on how I feel, because I just put together this wicked adorbs outfit with leather shorts and I feel like a super hero, I just have to apply makeup to go-with. It’s been ridiculously cold, so if I can stay in my warm pj’s, I have; which isn’t conducive to makeup.
I have been making a new list for this year, because my birthday is next week. I don’t think I’m going to come up with 22 unless I can come up with them naturally. I pushed for 21 last year and it was less fun that way. I have 18 things right now, I think, and I’m excited about all of them. We’ll see how well I do. I’ve done all but 2 or 3 from last year – some intentional, because some of those (like intrinsic value) are more of a life journey than something that can be achieved in a year, and others because of filming continuity (no piercings or tattoos yet).
I will watch some tutorials on HOW TO APPLY EYELINER WITHOUT POKING YOUR EYES OUT WITH EYELINER because that gets old, and I did that like 3 times while getting ready for our Valentines dinner at the Sea Grass Bistro – where I had foodgasms for the first time and it rocked my world.
Lamb chop with mint infused honey felt like a hug on my tongue. No idea that could happen.
I need to do some more cleaning – and sweep my floors because borked roomba is borked and having work space for stuff helps. But I’m strangely lacking the motivation as I’m on a bit of a WoW kick and leveling quicker than I have in a while – admittedly, all of twice, but I’m almost 87 and I only got to 86 a day or two ago, so that’s getting me closer to my goal of hitting cap.

Cleanse Eating

So I’m doing a cleanse, that is called the GMS diet or something. People say you can lose a lot of weight doing it, that’s not actually my goal – I’m doing it because I feel like my digestive system just needs a “hard reset” and it’s been finicky lately.
Today is was day one, and I’ve only eaten fruits and water except for the cup of black coffee I’m sipping on because of a headache (apparently lightheaded-ness is common).
Tomorrow, is vegetables only. I plan on eating a baked potato when I get up, and having a spinach salad with tomato, carrots, and my attempt at making my own dressing for dinner and/or lunch. I’ll probably munch on carrots during the day. I meant to pick up Asparagus, but I forgot, so I may do that and broil or sauté it with some garlic.
Thursday, I can do both fruits and vegetables. I’ll have spinach salad with strawberries, and maybe I’ll cook some carrots, tomatoes, and spinach in some garlic for dinner and have apples on the side. I’ll also start cutting things to make soup.
Friday, I can have bananas, milk, and soup. I plan on having a banana and strawberry smoothie, or maybe throwing spinach in there too if I don’t sauté it and have it on the side, I’ll have soup for dinner and snack on either carrots or bananas, unless I still have strawberries.
Saturday, I can start eating meat again. I’ll have a steak salad with tomatoes, and soup, and maybe some sort of beanless-noodle-less chili with fresh tomatoes. If we go out, I’ll have salads.
Sunday, I know we’re going out, so I’ll have whatever has beef and vegetables on the menu. Maybe I’ll even make some beef and brocolli.
Monday, is the last day, and I’m going to try making a beef-chinese-esque-stir fry with brown rice, beef, bell pepper, onions, and maybe some pineapple on the side.
The hardest part, so far, is remembering to drink all the water. Especially because I’m estimating with my water bottle. But I’ve drank a lot so far, I’m on my last two “glasses” (or as I’m guestimating – full water bottle),  -I actually feel a little less bloaty than when I started out this morning (which I’m sure has nothing to do with peeing a lot more than usual)- and keeping myself from grabbing a piece of bread, or a cookie, or Alex’s dinner.
It takes a bit more self control than I imagined, even though I do like eating fruit… a lot. But I think today is probably the hardest, and tomorrow. After that, more variety. And I have this to come back to for noming ideas.
I think setting things out in meal-like-shapes is going to be better for me. Dinner felt better than just eating fruit from the fridge like I had been doing all day, I think because it was all there and took less constant thought than, “should I grab the apple or the orange?” intermittently throughout the day.

me + food = meh

I realized earlier today, that I think the reason I enjoy food significantly less than everyone else is because I have no real emotional connection to it. I eat food because I have to as my body dislikes starvation. While I appreciate good food, and I have a handful of foods that I will be very happy if you serve me (dark chocolate, pizza, and mac & cheese) I don’t enjoy it like everyone else I know seems to. I wonder if it’s because food and I are less emotionally connected and if that’s part of the reason I only eat when I’m hungry and (generally) don’t eat more than I need to. I don’t eat for non-hunger reasons (like boredom or sadness or happiness) with the exception of being held captive by hormones that send me into a depressed and munchie ravage.
So today, I did something that I really don’t enjoy.

Finding recipes. I dread it and try to avoid it as much as possible usually, but something else hit me today.
I’m doing this because I think I’m worth it, and no one else can do this for me.
I want to eat healthier and cook healthier not because I’m a good wife, or I enjoy the process of making a good meal for my husband, because honestly, I don’t. I hate loathe the process and I have no satisfaction in cooking at all (thankfully my good-wifey-ness isn’t subject to my kitchen performances); but I finally think that I’m worth the effort, as much as I might hate the process.
So jumping into the annoying finding-recipes-and-making-lists quest I was able to write down some interesting bits of information I found from the encyclopedia, and hit with a little bit of genius, I came up with something to potentially solve the ever frustrating problem of not knowing what to do with leftover produce (you know, before it turns into goo).

I’m coming to the scary realization that taking this healthy eating thing on for myself means I need to actually put effort into finding food and using it and maybe even doing more cooking (sad). So if I can streamline some of that process to limit the amount of “I don’t know what to do with it” coma’s that I inevitably fall into, that might help me feel better about getting foods that expire in a week.
In the meantime, I’ll keep reminding myself that me and my health are worth the uh, torture of potential meal planning…and I’ll keep switching between Spongebob and MSNBC while I’m at it, because that seems to help.

I don't like diets

I find them restricting and complicated. I need something simple, just like, what do I need to eat to be healthy and how much? A drag and drop system would be lovely, and maybe I’ll make one someday. I went to the library the other day and brought home 4 books, remarkably, after flipping through most of them before coming home, the most helpful (so far) has been Food Rules.Food Rules
It’s kind of…perfect, and freeing. I was almost lamenting the other day about how if I’m really serious about this (and I am), it seems so complicated that it’s probably going to turn my life on it’s head and I’m going to need to become a food/nutrition guru just to be healthy. Unfortunately, as nice as that is…it’s not really my personality and the idea of putting all of my energy into some kind of plan just seemed…daunting and a bit suffocating.

Library Books

Especially with the books I brought home. Admittedly, I brought them all home for different reasons. Food Rules seemed like it’d be a great guide (and it is!), the Mayo Clinic book has colorful charts, and The Perfect Body Diet I ironically didn’t get for it’s diet, but because it lists and describes some interesting exercises that I think I can do in my second floor apartment. Ideally, I’ll get a $10 yoga mat, because I don’t like slipping on my hard floors. The um, encyclopedia I got because it’s an encyclopedia and seemed handy, though it’s remarkably hard to hold open.

Maybe I’ll garner up the nerve to watch Food Inc. on netflix. Food Rules was great in that it explained everything clearly and took off a lot of the pressure I was feeling to focus on individual elements in food, rather than how healthy and processed it is as a whole. So while they’re important I feel less need to think “okay, I’ve eaten 8 grams of protein and now I need to eat 12 grams of  vitamin __” because honestly, that was just stressing me out.

As much as I want to lose weight, I want to be healthy more. I’m not sick, but I’m definitely not exactly healthy either. I think that if I can eat well (which sadly means cooking, but I’ll be 21 in February so maybe if I drink a glass of wine while torturing myself by cooking, it’ll be more tolerable…and also healthy. Though I guess it’s better to have with food…but I’ll experiment) then my weight (and possibly hormones) will start to balance out as well.

This weeks’ diet of frozen dinners and ramen noodles has definitely angered my system enough for me to be open to change (I don’t think there was any chicken in my nuggets :S). The biggest and most helpful thing I’ve gleaned from Food Rules is basically that the biggest thing is how processed everything is. If you can stay away from as much processed stuff as possible and eat small/proper amounts (and lots of plants) of food in moderation, then you’re good. Which for me means I’m not restricted with what I make or what I eat, as long as it’s in moderation (which I kinda have down, because I get sick if I don’t :P) and as un-processed as possible.

While I don’t feel the need (or have a big enough wallet) to go to whole foods every week (as ideal as that would be) I’m okay (now) with spending more, for better quality food and shorter shelf life. Food Rules in combination with this article kinda helped with that. I tend to be a bit uptight when it comes to buying food…since I don’t particularly enjoy it anyway.

So that’s a step.

Noms

I’m not a huge fan of food. Basically, I eat because I’m grumpy if I don’t and then I confuse feeling hungry with feeling sick. So I’ve been working on eating – most of the time I eat breakfast, usually throw something together for lunch, and then we make or get takeout for dinner.
But I’m tired of spending lots of money on food during the week, but I dislike cooking everyday equally as much. Half of it, is because I feel like I have to spend too much time thinking about dinner way earlier than I want to (like, before I’m hungry for dinner…or lunch).
So my mother-in-law let us borrow this cookbook, that has meals by week and shopping lists. So next month, I think I’m going to try that. And it makes food for 4-6 people which means we’ll have leftovers.
For the rest of this week though, we decided to experiment with Ramen. We got a lot of little things of Ramen for lunches, because they’re cheap and should last until we can go grocery shopping while saving us from going to Subway or Amato’s every day for lunch.
I’m hoping, that if we end up eating out less (keeping it to weekends) then maybe we’ll be able to save a little more for all the things that we’re realizing we would like to have/save for. Moving steadily up to the top of that is a car…although, it’s still beneath my 27″ iMac.
But imagine if we just ate Ramen….
…we’d probably get really sick, so that’s out.

Infographic

I need someone to make an infographic of all the vitamins and things you need to have every day and what kinds of food to find them in, that way I can look at it and figure out how to make food that has all of it in there. Something that I could draw lines between to make a meal would be super fun. I really wish I remembered the things from my nutrition dvds in highschool…
Also, an info graphic on how to adjust my eyes and nose to cat hair would be cool too. I don’t think the weather outside is helping at all either. It’s too cold and wet to open the windows for long. I did just sweep up though, so I probably got some more furs on me. It’s nothing unbearable though, just not used to it yet. Tonks is so worth it though, he’s adorable.

sidebar: I did some more screenwriting in my office on my comfy futon. I think I’m going to finish the dishes and paint to Harry Potter, and if there’s time, do some questing in Northrend before I finish the laundry and go grocery shopping. (Dinner adventure consists of applebees because we already ate the tasty salisbury steak for lunch).
